Brenndarcy Cairn Terriers

Brenda with “Darcy” |
“Brenndarcy”- is a mixture of Brenda, Danny & Darcy
In 1990 my 19 year old rough haired
Jack Russell “Paddy” died. I loved him to bits, he was so “macho”, I actually
believe that he would have died for me, he loved children, most women and some men!
He was also a bit a of a scrapper, and very hard work. His epitaph would have
been.

If It has four Legs, kill it! –
I desperately needed another Dog, my
main criteria was:-
A
Terrier - A Character – Fun – Loving – Obedient and Loyal.
I got a large book about Dogs from
the local Library and the Cairn Terrier seemed to be the favourite. I think the
phrase “ Assertive without being aggressive” was what won me over.
I bought “Darcy” from an
advertisement in The Yorkshire Post. It turned out to be a puppy farm in East
Yorks. My head said no - go away, my heart said I must take one home, and off
course I fell in love with the one that was chewing my shoe laces. I called him
“Mr Darcy” after the hero of my favourite Jane Austen novel “Pride and
Prejudice” .
In 1992 I met Danny, Darcy
wasn’t too sure of him at first (jealousy) but they soon became best pals.
Danny had always owned dogs and actually had an old Bull Terrier called Kim
when we met. (She lived out her final days with his brother).
Danny soon became as besotted with
Darcy and the Cairn breed as I was.
Picture
of Leeds show |
One of our first “dates” was a
visit to the 1992 Leeds Championship show held on Harewood House Estate. We sat
around the Cairn Terrier ring and loved what we saw. We both especially liked
the look of a particular Red dog. Years later when I found this picture we
realised he was Ch. Kinkim Bruff Too Flox! (The Kinkim lines now feature
heavily in our Kennel) . Also in the photograph is Norma Newton and Strathinver
Smart Guy.
In 1996 we decided that we would
like to get another Cairn as a friend for Darcy and remembering that
show, we decided that it had to be a “Red”. After talking to John Berrecloth,
secretary of the Cairn Terrier Club, we were put in touch with Norma Newton
(Strathinver) of Scarborough (she bred reds!) We duly ordered a red bitch from
her.
Later that year Darcy developed a
Leukaemia type illness, although not proven, my Vet thought it was most likely
from him being ill as a pup, he had been “sheep dipped” at the puppy farm to
delouse him! He died at home in my arms at only six years old.
